Soutpansberg Overnight Hiking Trail

This hiking trail is in the northernmost mountain range of South Africa. The Soutpansberg range is formed from Karoo sediments and lava that were deposited here by glaciers about 2000 million years ago. Our Stone Age ancestors left their implements in the Soutpansberg and the skeletal remains of the ancient 'ape man' (Australopithecus) were found in the Makapan caves near Mokopane, 175 km west of the Soutpansberg.
